The University of Salford presented collections from their MA fashion graduate designers at London fashion Week 2023 – the next emerging fashion designers.
Here are a few of the fashion graduates whose collections would make beautiful outfits for a day at the races:
Mark Buendia’s (label called Navora Designs) collection is based on the Philippine jeepney and is titled ‘Le Parcours’. It is a narrative about enjoying life’s journey to reach success.
The collection is a colourful celebration of ascension, with oversized vibrant hats in pink and green.
We love the statement crown of the hat combined with a sporty peaked front. Buendia’s looks created the impression of excessive elegant birds.
Anna Li was inspired by contrast – materially, structurally and conceptually.
The above futuristic tailored pieces in neutral tones would make a sophisticated statement for a day at the races.
Li’s collection merges tradition and futuristic design presenting ethereal tulle skirts overlaid with interlocking skeletal details (reminiscent of industrial chains). Li reminds us of the close proximity of both past and future.
Beth Rothwell has a strong sense of playfulness and femininity. Rothwell draws inspiration from insects and how they use their appearance as their main method of defence. Titled ‘How to Scare Off Predators’ the collection represents an army of women unafraid.
The above navy layered tulle dress with hundreds of hand pleated strips will probably need a camisole underneath for a day at the races. But go for a pale neutral shade to show off the spots.
Gold is the main colour and polka dots/spots the main pattern as the above dress shows with its gold edged pleats and layers of polka dot pleated cotton and silk twill.
Rebecca Hearne’s ‘Forbidden Fruit’ explores the controversial and provocative history of the Femme Fatale. A love letter to the Disastrous Women whose stories have been reduced by this narrative.
Jade Williams: in a stigmatised society, Williams identifies social issues surrounding teenage pregnancy. Titled ‘Rebellious Adolescence’ the collection explores negative misconceptions and challenges through clothing.
Williams uses graffiti as her print such as My Blessing, ? Mother, My Mistake…
… And juxtaposes pops of bright colour with neutrals and feminine tulle with tailored vinyl. A stunning look for those cooler and more rainy days at the races.
Debbie Babalola’s collection is a tribute to the designer’s mother. Created for all strong women out there, career and stay at home mums who sacrifice their time to nurture their children, those who effectively manage work and family life and all young ladies/girls aspiring to become that strong guardian angel/mother someday.
Colour palette black with pops of pink. We are loving the above jumpsuit with its hat brim style asymmetric trim.
Anna Salad’s (label called Salted Greens) collection has been inspired by an exploration of gaining riches and wealth through others’ naivety and demonstrates the falsity surrounding online money manipulation. Hence the colour palette of shiny metallic gold.
Not forgetting the men, Salad’s collection features both women’s and men’s fashion.
Decorative details include cording, topstitch, pull cords and gold sequins
