Quick Guide to the new British Champions’ Series

Get up to speed with the biggest overhaul of British racing for centuries: the new British Champions’ Series.

WHAT IS IT?

The new British Champions’ Series has been created to present Flat racing’s most prestigious annual races as an overall sequence. The aim is to help spectators follow particular horses and their achievements throughout the season – like following a football club’s progress through a championship series.

Horses will be competing in five separate championship categories, according to their specialist distance or gender:

  • Sprint
  • Mile
  • Middle Distance
  • Long Distance
  • Fillies and Mares

Each category features six top races held at different racecourses throughout the summer. There will then be a championship final for each category held on the new British Champions’ Day.

WHEN IS IT?

The Series will launch on Saturday 30th April 2011 with the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course; and it concludes with the inaugural British Champions’ Day – this will be the richest fixture in British racing history offering more than £3 million of prize money – to be held at Ascot Racecourse on 15th October 2011.

WHERE IS IT?

British Champions’ Series will be staged at ten of the UK’s leading racecourses: Ascot, Doncaster, Epsom Downs, Goodwood, Haydock Park, Newbury, Newmarket’s July Course, Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, Sandown Park and York.

It will encompass British racing’s key festivals, including the Guineas Festival at Newmarket, the Epsom Derby Festival, Royal Ascot, the Newmarket July Festival, Glorious Goodwood, the Ebor Festival at York and the Doncaster St Leger Meeting.
