Frankel retains his unbeaten record at Royal Newbury Races

Frankel, unbeaten in all four starts of his two-year-old career, kept his record intact today (16 April) when impressively winning the Group 3 totesport.com Greenham Stakes for trainer Henry Cecil, owner Khalid Abdulla and under Jockey Tom Queally at Newbury Racecourse.

In front of 9,500 racegoers, 1,200 up on last year’s figure, Frankel’s command over the race was never in doubt as he pulled clear of his rivals in the final furlong for a convincing win by four lengths from the 25/1 shot Excelebration.  Following the performance bookmakers cut Frankel at best to 5/6 for the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in early May.

Jockey Tom Queally commented on Frankel: “He did it well, it’s the first run of the season and he’s entitled to improve a great deal from that.”

Queally fortune’s started earlier in the day with a win in the second race for trainer James Given on board Indian Days in the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Surprise Stakes. Then following Frankel’s performance, the combination of Queally, Abdulla and Cecil were once again in the winner’s enclosure when World Domination won a smart race in the totesport 0800 221221 Maiden Stakes.

It was also a successful afternoon for up and coming Jockey Mickael Barzalona who won the competitive totescoop six Spring Cup on board Light from Mars and then notched a double with Laajooj in the Godolphin colours in the first division of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Maiden Stakes.

The Queen, who had four horses running, returned to Newbury Racecourse on the second day of its April Fixture, with both Discovery Bay and General Synod finishing in second place in division’s 1 and 2 of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Maiden Stakes.

Activities off the racecourse were dedicated to the Emergency Services, with the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance taking centre stage, with funds raised for the day being donated to the life saving service.  Racegoers had the opportunity to find out about life as Air Ambulance Crew as well as in the emergency services from the numerous displays and demonstrations.  Another VIP, Fireman Sam caused quite a stir with the younger racegoers along with his friends, Newbury Racecourse mascot Harry the Horse, Bob the TVAA mascot and the Lambourn Open Day Easter Bunny!

Joint Managing Director of Newbury Racecourse, Stephen Higgins commented “It was great for so many racegoers to witness Frankel’s win here today who is such an exciting racehorse for this year.  We were also delighted to welcome over 900 Emergency Service and NHS personnel for free and recognise the invaluable service they provide the Newbury community and beyond”.
