what to wear to Cheltenham Festival Ladies’ Day
The Festival at Cheltenham is the culmination of the Jump or National Hunt racing season and over the four days of The Festival approximately 220,000 people will join in with the Cheltenham Roar as the horses run up the famous hill towards the finishing post.
Ladies’ Day is on the Wednesday of The Festival and presents lady racegoers with a thorny question… What to wear? Take a look at our raceday pictures from Spring 2010 to get some ideas!
Unlike most racecourses, Cheltenham has not held an annual Ladies’ Day for years and years – in fact it only created a Ladies’ Day at the Cheltenham Festival in 2007. This means that when deciding what to wear, there is not the same depth of racing fashion precedent to guide you that you might find with other top racing festivals.
With fabulous Best Dressed prizes on offer, the Cheltenham fashion creates a quandary. Racing fashion for Cheltenham is unique in its requirements: a Ladies’ Day – in very early spring, at a classically traditional Jump festival, demands an outfit somewhere between ‘dressy’ fashion and ‘practical’ wear to combat the seasonal weather. So if you’re going to the races, do you choose delicate dresses, or tweed?
Some brave souls opt to go to the races in strappy dresses and big hats (as traditionally sported at Flat racing or, famously, at Aintree’s Grand National Festival Ladies’ Day) risking hypothermia and raised eyebrows amongst the ‘traditional’ Jump racing crowd native to Cheltenham; while others choose smart tweeds and furs as an upgrade of their usual winter racing wardrobe – risking a triumph of warmth and comfort over colour and panache.
At Eclipsemagazine.co.uk, we’ve done extensive research into what you should wear to Cheltenham Ladies’ Day, and what you most certainly shouldn’t. Advice from the experts in our guide covers topics such as:
- Having more than one outfit picked out just in case the weather takes a turn for the worse – or the better – at the last moment!
- What to wear on your feet – footwear, wellies
- The best kind of coat to wear – outfit, tweeds
- Whether a hat is an essential part of Ladies Day outfit! – headwear
- What NOT to wear! – faux pas
TOP TIP: If you are party to some of Cheltenham Racecourse’s famed hospitality, you’re advised to come dressed in layers, or you’ll be toasty outside and toasted inside!
