This style of t-shirt started a sleepy life as an under vest in the 1800s so it definitely fits the dress down bill. However, from 1839, it flexed its muscles as Henley rowers began to wear them as part of their uniform for the Henley Regatta due to the increased ventilation it gave from the placket and lack of collar. It proudly adopted the name as the Henley. Here it stayed in the sports world until 1970s when a buyer from Ralph Lauren recognised its potential as a new t-shirt style for casual wear.
