About Newton Abbot Racecourse
National Hunt
1866 Start
Newton Abbot Racecourse has operated at the same site since 1866, after local equine fans clubbed together to buy the land. Set on the edge of the busy market town, it is widely recognised as an important National Hunt summer racecourse and was visited by Her Majesty the Queen Mother in 1969 to open the new main grandstand.
Modernisation
Modernisation of the facilities continued from 1990 onwards. From 1974 to 2005 the inside of the course also featured a greyhound track – it was dismantled each time the horseracing was on, and reassembled again afterwards.
