Newton Abbot Ladies’ Day success

The worlds of fashion and horseracing combined on 22 June, for the ever-popular annual Newton Abbot Racecourse’s Ladies’ Day.

Despite the current economic climate, the glorious sunshine saw thousands of women descend on the racecourse in all of their finery for the most glamorous fixture in the racing calendar.

Ladies who were lucky enough to secure tickets for the VIP marquee were treated to an unforgettable day at the races which began with them being greeted at the champagne reception by two top-less butlers from The Desirable Butlers Company.

Following the drinks reception, the VIP guests enjoyed a two-course meal before the start of the afternoon’s fashion show which showcased some of the latest clothing ranges from Clarks Village. The clothes were modelled by the Abanico Salsa team who then entertained the crowd with their mesmerising salsa moves before the start of the evening racing.

Fashionistas were in abundance at the course prior to the start of the racing, hoping to be chosen as finalists in the closely fought contest for the best dressed and best hat competition, which saw Ingrid Antcliffe and Diane Bradley walk away with the much contested titles.

In keeping with the Ladies’ Day focus of the race meeting, the evening’s racing action concluded with The Newton Abbot Races GB v Ireland Lady Amateur Riders Handicap Hurdle, which was the first leg of a two race challenge that saw 6 female jockeys compete for their respective countries. The final race of the evening was won by Ireland’s Lisa O’Neill her first ever win under rules.

As the sun set on another memorable Ladies’ Day at Newton Abbot, race-goers returned to the VIP marquee to dance the night away to the sounds of the swinging sixties with the 5-piece tribute band, Carnaby Street.

Pat Masterson, Managing Director at Newton Abbot Racecourse commented: “In the current economical climate we were absolutely delighted with the event. Everyone who came through the turnstiles joined in with the occasion which led to a terrific atmosphere and colour. The VIP marquee was vibrant all evening and the crowd was awash with stunning ladies dressed for the occasion.”

“We will certainly be holding the event next season and details will be available later in the year but please call the course to notify us of your interest.”
