Born and raised in Kabul Afghanistan, Saleema Amin fuses tradition and modernity.
Inspired by her mother’s stitching and fuelled by her passion for design, Saleema’s journey has been one of resilience and determination. After a decade-long break from education, she reignited her dreams, studying fashion at London Metropolitan University, where her work became a symbol of empowerment and freedom.
Her debut collection titled ‘Unwavering’ is a bold statement of defiance and hope, inspired by the struggles of Afghan women under oppressive regimes. The collection serves as both a protest and a tribute to their unyielding strength, with symbolic elements representing the silence, constraints, and societal barriers they face.
Stitched Lips – a pair of cushioned red lips designed as a top and worn with a black taffeta gown skirt. A meandering embroidered line stitches the lips together, symbolising the forced silence of Afghan women.
Taped Torso – a body con midi dress in black velvet and sheer organza horizontal stripes from tights, representing the societal limitations imposed on them.
Black Mindedness – addressing the narrow perspectives of regimes suppressing women’s rights.
The materials used in ‘Unwavering’ — velvet, wire, metal, and chains —symbolise the softness, strength, and restraints placed upon Afghan women, while also highlighting their resilience. Saleema views fashion as a platform for challenging oppression and advocating for women’s rights.
Saleema Amin’s work marks a new era where fashion meets activism. Her designs inspire and empower women, reminding the world that fashion can be a powerful tool for change. ‘Unwavering’ is just the beginning.
Saleema’s message is clear and is a call to Afghan women: “We will not be silenced. We will fight for our freedom.” This is symbolised through her finale white gown. Initially the gown is concealed under a black cloak which is then defiantly thrown onto the ground.
Her collection serves as a powerful testament to women’s enduring strength and a call for global solidarity in the fight for equality.
