Winter Racing Season: Early December sees some top class Jumps festivals including the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle (2nd December) and the Ladbrokes Winter Carnival (formerly the Hennessy) Trophy at Newbury (1st & 2nd December).

Fashion is taking a smart turn with tailoring being one of the top trends this season as the skirt suit joins the trouser suit in the stylish line-up. With checks being the pattern to go for, choose bold prints and colours to ensure you don’t look as though you’ve come straight from the office.

Hugo Boss skirt suit makes a statement in oversized rust and navy check with fringed edging down the front of the jacket and along the skirt’s hemline. The matching skirt rests just above the knee and is in the pencil style, another smart trend for this season. Jacket price £350; Skirt price £169; both from House of Fraser.

Warm up to a smart casual look by pairing the suit with a jumper: Karen Millen orange knitted jumper with fluted sleeves. Price £90 from House of Fraser.

Give the outfit an edgy look and be the ‘Golden Girl’ in Gioseppo Cobre metallic gold leather ankle boots. The boots’ snake skin print and band of glitter around the tube shaped heel add texture. Price £89.96 from House of Fraser.

Mix up your checks with a Tweed clutch bag from Kaye Hannabuss Textiles. The wool tweed is in navy, orange and mustard dogtooth print whilst the lining is an additional style bonus in a cotton floral Liberty London print. Price £60 via Etsy.

Accessories can pull an outfit together, and on an autumnal day at the races they can also help take the chill away.

Although not compulsory, hats are synonymous with racing and in the right material will help keep your head warm. This royal blue wool felt toque hat by SH Millinery is embellished with a wired felt hand cut feather which can be manipulated to change shape and orientation allowing the feather to stand up ostentatiously or wrap around the hat is a more subtle style. Your choice. Price £110 via Etsy.

Wrap a wide scarf around your shoulders such as this long scarf made from Merino wool in vibrant orange and blue. Hand woven in the traditional old weaving pattern called Wall of Troy which complements the bold check of the suit. Price £85 from Hand Woven by Carole on Etsy.

Choose gloves in fashionable velvet. These Dents gloves are made from soft velvet gathered at the sides for a ruched effect. Price £20 from House of Fraser.
