Glorious Goodwood – DETICA SUMMER HANDICAP

  • Three-year-olds and upwards. One mile and six furlongs. First run 1997

Yorkshire-based trainer Mark Johnston won this race three times in four years, with Scott’s View setting the ball rolling in 2002.

The tough performer added a second Glorious Goodwood handicap four days later and was subsequently Group One placed in Hong Kong. Darasim finished second to his stablemate in 2002 but gained compensation in the Coutts Glorious Stakes three days later and won this race in 2003. In 2004, the remarkable gelding progressed to capture the Coutts Goodwood Cup. Johnston saddled Golden Quest to succeed in 2005 and the four-year-old ran second in the Coutts Goodwood Cup later that week.

Luca Cumani also has a fine record in the Detica Summer Handicap. The Newmarket handler saddled subsequent Ebor hero Mephisto to win in 2004, while Soulacroix prevailed in 2006. Cumani added a third success in 2008 with top-weight Sanbuch, who was winning his second race at Glorious Goodwood having carried off the bluesquare.com Stakes 12 months earlier.
