Cheltenham Festival Fashion – Footwear

When you’re on your feet all day the right footwear can make or break your Cheltenham Festival raceday experience.

We asked our fashion experts: what footwear do you recommend for The Festival?

GEORGIE: The best footwear, again, is weather dependent. You can’t go wrong wearing stylish boots, as they are so comfortable and warm. As I am running around all day on grass and Tarmac I will be wearing boots on all four days of The Festival.

Comfortable shoes are also a good option, especially if you are going to be in one of the many bars or restaurants at the racecourse but remember if you are going to be on your feet all day wear shoes that you will be comfortable in.

MEALLY: A lot of people like to wear flat shoes to the races and I think they are very sensible. My friends and I all wear heels to the races as they are smart and I think a great pair of shoes can make an outfit, the down side being I am usually lame by the end of the week.

High heeled over-the-knee boots are in fashion this year and look great when worn with the right outfit. Long flat boots are also very popular with racegoers, e.g. my Mum and Alice Plunkett wear them to do lots of running around after racehorses.

LIZ: Again, this is dependent on the weather and usually in March strappy sandals would be a no no, unless you want to freeze or get your heel stuck in the mud. Nice leather boots with a heel (but not a stiletto) always look good, or if you do want to wear shoes, then make sure you have thick tights with them.

For Ladies’ Day, I’d go for something similar to the other days but make this your most tailored and well-fitting outfit. Good boots, with a pencil skirt, polo neck, bright tailored coat and hat can look really striking, especially if topped off with leather gloves and a nice bag.
