Casino Style In 2022 – Are There Any Do’s and Don’ts?

Think of a casino and it conjures the nostalgic images of James Bond-esque figures dressed in tuxedos with black bow ties…

with scantily clad ballroom appropriate accomplices by their side drinking Martinis (shaken, not stirred) and indulging in high roller table games. The truth is, it’s not always quite like that and despite the image and the style associated with the land based casino scene, there has certainly been change in the etiquette and dress code that comes with it in the relatively recent past.

The rules associated with casino dress code in 2022 are somewhat common sense. Each casino is likely to have their own personalised dress code and there is of course a degree of flexibility based on different factors such as:

  • Location: Are you in Las Vegas or Rotherham, this is likely to play a part
  • Time of Day: Turning up in a tuxedo at 11am is likely to be a bit much. Don’t let it put you off if that’s what puts you in your rhythm, but you are likely to garner a few funny looks in most venues.
  • Reputation of Casino: Some Casinos have reputations as classy locales which favour high roller table games, others are angled more towards slots games or novelties. The dress code of these varying venues is likely to differ somewhat.

With all of this in mind, there are a few items of clothing which are universally better avoided in terms of your gambling attire, these include:

  • Open toe sandals, flip flops & crocs. It should go without saying, but unless you’re strolling on a Bajan beach or taking the bins out at 9.30pm on a Tuesday  – give these a miss.
  • Trainers / Sneakers. This is a contentious one, and won’t apply to every casino – but many gambling venues won’t allow entrants wearing trainers, especially in the evening. Review the guidelines before you make a call on this.
  • Ripped & torn clothing. It might be considered fashionable in day to day wear, but this does not mean that it will translate well to the casino floor. Many locations will deny you entry based upon this factor, so beware.

Casinos in Europe are often considered to have a slightly more stringent outlook on dress code, with more falling into a traditional dress / formal category. If you’re an American who has travelled to Europe for a gambling experience, whether this be in the UK, Switzerland, Spain or elsewhere – be aware that the rules are likely to differ from what you are used to back home.

There are typically considered to be 6 main categories of dress code when referring to casinos. A brief outline of them is below:

  • Casual casino clothes (Jeans and a T-shirt, presentable trainers allowed)
  • Semi-formal casino apparel (Otherwise known as smart casual, jeans are okay but trainers are probably not)
  • Business casual casino apparel / Semi-formal (Trousers, dresses etc)
  • Business formal casino apparel
  • Black-tie casino outfit (Tuxedos & Ball Gowns are appropriate)
  • White-tie casino outfits (Floor length gowns and jackets with tails only)

As we move into an age with formality within a business world and day to day life becomes increasingly uncommon, the representation of this in the casino scene is a pretty accurate reflection of society in general. That goes to say that there are more casual venues than there are formal ones, but you still need to do your due diligence before slipping on your gambling threads.
