After a wonderful weekend away at the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham racecourse, I am finding this week hard to get back into the swing of things.

One of my favourite things to do during down time at the races is to survey the scene for millinery.

What I did find was lots of fur headbands. and also many pillboxes with either peacock or pheasant feathers…

…I went for a Cara Meehan Millinery mini pillbox with pheasant feathers and a brooch.

The fashion overall was great with lots of lovely fitted thick coats. Next up is the Hennessy at Newbury on 30th November, where hopefully we will see lots more fabulous millinery on display.

Whilst I have a few days without any emergency orders (!) I thought now is the time to get down to some serious designing and making for the Spring/Summer collection.

I have plenty of ideas, some of which have been developed in hats already.

The hardest part I find sourcing all the materials. I like to go to the individual shops myself and hand pick the feathers, silks and trimmings.

I was delighted recently when I received a phone call asking me to design a few bespoke hats for the BBC costume department. The hats where to be used for long-running soap, Eastenders. The character Roxy was due to get married to Alfie Moon, landlord of the Queen Vic.

I was invited into the studios to look at the costumes that some of the guests were wearing, and to make some suggestions as to what hats I thought may suit. We came up with some ideas, and decided that we did not want too many guests wearing hats as they are very distinctive and would be unrealistic at an East End wedding.

We decided on two characters. The episode is due to be aired at the end of November. It will be nice to see some individual quirky hats on TV – especially being my own designs!
