TOMMY HILFIGER (TH): “My idea in the future would be to build Tommy Hilfiger Home fully, with anything and everything from furniture to tabletop. And we’re working on that now.”
Designer Tommy Hilfiger recently gave CNN’s Alina Cho a tour of his 6,000-square-foot, two-storey penthouse apartment in The Plaza Hotel, New York.
Hilfiger’s apartment boasts walls plastered with original famous Warhol pieces, ‘his and her’s’ walk-in wardrobes and a jaw-dropping view over Central Park. Watch the video now and take a look for yourself!

VOICE OVER (VO): TOMMY HILFIGER’S NAME IS SYNONYMOUS WITH PREPPY CHIC… URBAN FLAIR… WITH A LOOK THAT IS ALL AMERICAN. WHAT SOME DON’T KNOW ABOUT THIS BIG NAME DESIGNER IS THAT HE’S ALSO A BIG COLLECTOR OF REAL ESTATE… AND ART.
I RECENTLY TOOK A TOUR OF ONE OF HIS PALATIAL HOMES… INSIDE ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS BUILDINGS IN THE WORLD.
SOME CALL TOMMY HILFIGER THE KING OF FASHION… BUT HERE AT HIS HOME IN NEW YORK CITY…
AC: Tommy and Dee… Nice to see you.
VO: HE LIVES LIKE A PRINCE. THE PRINCE OF THE PLAZA HOTEL.
AC: Why the Plaza?
TH: Well, location is number one. But I also like the fact that it’s an iconic building.
VO: ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS HOTELS IN THE WORLD… OVERLOOKING CENTRAL PARK… ON NEW YORK’S FAMED FIFTH AVENUE… A TWO-STOREY, SIX-THOUSAND SQUARE FOOT APARTMENT… THAT TOOK THREE YEARS TO COMPLETE…
TH: “We really wanted to go back to the way the Plaza was in the beginning when Truman Capote had the black and white ball.”
VO: OLD WORLD CHARM…
TH: The original Plaza had red carpets on the stairs.” (points to own red-carpeted stairs]
VO: …WITH A MODERN TWIST. THERE’S CONTEMPORARY ART EVERYWHERE. BASQUIAT… HARING… AND DOZENS AND DOZENS OF FAMOUS WARHOLS.
TH: Icons, yeah, because I like American icons.
VO: LIZ TAYLOR… GRACE KELLY… MARILYN MONROE.
PART OF THE ALLURE IS THAT HILFIGER KNEW WARHOL… A MAN OF FEW WORDS.
TH: One time I asked Andy, I said, ‘Why do you do what you do?’ He said, ‘Because I like it.’ That was it. OK. (laughs)
AC: There you go.
TH: Got it!
VO: ON OUR TOUR… WE GOT A PEEK INSIDE HIS PRIVATE OFFICE…
TH: Actually, this is from the original New York Times building (shows ‘New York Times’ sign above door)
AC: You’re kidding me.
VO: THERE’S THIS…
TH: This is the Eloise room. The Eloise room is really the tower…
AC: Oh, wow.
TH: … in the Plaza.
VO: YOU KNOW ELOISE… SHE’S THE FICTIONAL STORYBOOK CHARACTER WHO WREAKED HAVOC AT THE PLAZA.
HILFIGER COMMISSIONED THE BOOK’S ILLUSTRATOR TO PAINT THE MURAL IN THIS ROOM.
Dee Hilfiger, Tommy’s wife: Eloise lived here for a reason. There’s great room service…
VO: SPEAKING OF ROOMS…
AC: Wow, now, this feels like the Plaza to me.
TF: It’s sort-of like our own hotel suite.
VO: WITH HIS AND HER CLOSETS…
TF: My own clothing store. // Even though I wear the same thing everyday.
VO: AND THAT’S NOT ALL. THE HILFIGERS STAY BUSY SHUTTLING BETWEEN THREE HOMES.
IN ADDITION TO NEW YORK… HE AND HIS WIFE, DEE, OWN HOMES IN GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT… AND THIS — CALLED PALM BEACH — ON THE ISLAND OF MUSTIQUE.
TH: I’ve always wanted to acquire trophy real estate.
TH: Because location, location, location is very important. And I think that, as an investment, you can’t do better than that.”
VO: HIS ADVICE FOR LIVING THE GOOD LIFE ON A BUDGET?
TH: Buy what you like. And you can go to flea markets, you can go to rummage sales, you can go to antique places and find really, really great pieces for not a lot of money. And I think if you surround yourself with things you love, then it makes for a great home design.
