The Grand National
is the one race that almost everyone (over 18) in the UK gets involved with, from the most ardent of horse racing fans to downright beginners. You’ll always find the bookmakers full to the brim on Grand National day with hundreds of thousands of people backing a horse or maybe more, with the beginners taking hardly any account of form, jockey or trainer into consideration. A lot of the time, it’ll be their favourite jersey colour or a name that relates to them. For most novices, it’s a pure lottery!
For horse racing fans and expert punters alike, it’s a completely different story. For those, the Grand National is a serious event, in fact it’s often described as the world’s greatest and most popular steeplechase. Even though it’s only classed as a Grade Three Race, the race brings a pot of over £1million, serious stuff indeed.
This year the race will be ran at a slightly later than usual time of 5.15pm on Saturday 9th April, with runners including Long Run, after a 658 day absence from the racecourse, Jonjo O’Neill’s 9 year old Holywell, Willie Mullins’ Ballycasey and many others.
