We take a look at the Ladies’ Days on offer at racecourses this summer – and some Gentlemen’s Days too!
Whichever enclosure you are visiting on a Ladies Day, you will feel underdressed if you don’t make an effort. Ladies Days have become the annual opportunity for many to show off a fabulous new dress, shoes or handbag, and one of the few chances in a lifetime to wear a stunning hat or headpiece. Don’t forget the important extras, including make-up, hair and possibly fake tan!
Most of your outfit will be suitable for reworking into outfits for other occasions – birthdays, weddings, Christmas parties, dinner parties – so although it might seem extravagant to go to all this trouble for one day, your efforts won’t be entirely frivolous.
If you hate the thought of your hat gathering dust on the top of your wardrobe, there are plenty of places to hire one for your big racing day out. And for the same price as buying a mass-produced high street hat, you’ll be able to stretch to a spectacular designer number if you loan it for the day. Some hat hire businesses even offer a racecourse collection and return service.
Alternatively, check out charity shops that often do a great line in raceday/wedding hats – and consider donating the hat back to them again afterwards. You can also spice up an older hat with new clip-on flowers or brooches, new ribbons, feather clip-on hair accessories, or a lovely silk scarf tied around the hatband, with a large floaty bow.
So, even if you’re in a picnic enclosure, take this chance to dress to impress and make a real day of it!
