It’s the start of a new year and that means two things, well in fashion terms at least, number one being the hugely anticipated January sales in which people queue for hours to grab themselves a bargain, and number two being the arrival in stores of the Spring/Summer collections.

I know as well as you that it always seems to come a little sooner than we’d hoped or even needed, but in some ways its a welcome relief as stores suddenly go from having hot sale items to tired-looking has-beens.

And anyway, early or not, I’m ever so excited about Spring/Summer this year as it sees the return of one of my personal favourite fashion eras…the ’70s!! Brigitte Bardot and Farrah Fawcett fans will love this.

But the Seventies isn’t the only trend to be excited about, as this Spring/Summer sees the return of some of last year’s hottest trends with a new spin put on, such as the military trend, florals and brights. As well as new trends such as biker chic and punk.

Here I have listed my Top 5 Looks to watch out for in Spring/Summer 2011. It’s going to be an exciting season. Enjoy!

LOOK 1: The Seventies

This is set to be a huge trend this season, following on from the high-waist trousers and roll-neck sweaters of Autumn/Winter 2010, this season the flared jean is at the forefront teamed with a blouse for an ultra-chic Charlie’s Angel look. (See LOOK 1 below.)

By night, think Studio 54 with sparkly floor-length dresses. Very sleek and sassy. Pictured right: Spring/Summer 2011 collection modelled by Fearne Cotton.

LOOK 2: Playsuits/Jumpsuits

I for one am glad these are still on trend this season. Playsuits are great for daytime casual. Neutral tones are still on trend this season and look great with lighter denims. (See LOOK 2 below.)

Tailored jumpsuits are great for the evening when worn with heels or platforms.

White lace shirt £24.99, Loose-knit jumper £24.99, Flared Jeans
£25.99, Sunglasses £7.99,
Sandals £7.99, all from New Look.

Tie up playsuit £26.99, Denim light
waistcoat £22.99, Tan buckle bag £9.99,
Tan heels
£29.99, all from New Look.

LOOK 3: Denim

The denim shirt is a must-have wardrobe essential for 2011 with its comfort and coolness. For a real fashionista look team it with a darker denim jean or skirt for the double denim look.(See LOOK 3 below.)

LOOK 4: Platforms

The must-have shoe this season, these will look great with all the ’70s-inspired clothing that will be around this season, and as you can see from this picture (see LOOK 4 below), skirt hems are also set to get longer, with the reintroduction of below-the-knee ’50s-inspired hemlines. These hip-hugging skirts are the ultimate in accentuating curves.

Denim tied shirt £19.99, Denim
button-up skirt with belt £21.99,
Sunglasses £7.99, Sandals £7.99.
New Look.

Dawn fedora £29.99, Mossy fringed top,
Matilda full skirt £24.99, Kelly platforms
£69.99. River Island.

LOOK 5: Crochet/Lace and Macrame

These were all over the catwalk this season, but a lot fresher than last season’s tight all-over lace evening dresses; for this season it’s all about detail on separates.

Pictured: River Island –

LEFT: Anouskha suede top, Emily fringe scarf, Bronagh suede trousers £140, Ivie wedges £69.99.

RIGHT: Mena sheer crochet jumper £34.99, Bree fisherman pants £29.99, Eva wedges £69.99.

So, there you have it, and that was just a taster! It seems that this summer the ’70s trend is going to be huge, as some of the other trends have even been inspired by the ’70s too. But I’m really happy as I think it’s a great era to revive. The flattering shapes of the ’70s, with the high-waisted flares and long-length dresses are set to give us all the perfect silhouette.
