A day at the races is exciting and fun, a chance to dress up and show off your style prowess. Like any outdoor activity, it also exposes you to the sun, even if the day is overcast, the sun’s UV rays can pass through the clouds and burn.

To prevent a red face here are a few tips to follow:

Sunscreen: for a day outside, sun cream is essential, but it can be heavy on the skin and leave the face feeling greasy and the pores clogged up. Look for an oil-free face sun cream to help give a matte finish and shine free complexion.

Your sunscreen should have both UVA and UVB protection.

UVB: The SPF of a sunscreen relates to UVB – the rays that cause sunburn and can lead to skin cancer.

UVA: UVA rays are present even on cloudy days, cause premature ageing and are linked to melanoma. Not all sunscreens have UVA protection. To check if a sunscreen has UVA protection look for PA +++ or the words Broad Spectrum on the bottle.

Murad Oil Free Sunscreen Broad Spectrum offers both UVA and UVB protection. SPF30 PA+++. Price £27 from John Lewis.

Allow the sunscreen to fully absorb in to the skin for approx 30 minutes before applying primer, foundation or going outside.

Brush on Powdered Sunscreen or Spray on Sun Shield

One application of sunscreen will not protect the skin for the whole day; it does needs to be reapplied approximately every two hours. Not good news for your carefully applied make-up.

In order to prevent your makeup being ruined and wiped off at the first re-application of sunscreen, choose a brush on powder sunscreen or an instant spray on sunshield which both can be used over makeup.

Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush on Sunscreen SPF30 has a self dispensing brush for an on the go application. The powder offers broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection, is chemical free and non greasy. Available in two shades. Price £41 from Beauty Products Online.

Launched this year, Nannic spray on UV Shield not only protects the skin from UBV and UVA, but has the added bonus of helping improve skin firmness, moisturising the skin, helping protect against hyper pigmentation and reducing skin scaling. It is oil free and does not stain clothes. Price £37.99.
