The annual Ladies’ Day at Redcar every June is one of the fashion and social highlights in the Tees Valley calendar.

This year’s big occasion is on Saturday 18 June and, as always, thousands of ladies will get out their finery, dress up and join their partners or friends for an afternoon at the races.

It comes at the end of the week featuring Royal Ascot, the race meeting so associated with high fashion.

As is traditional at the racecourse’s Ladies’ Day, there are major prizes for the ‘best dressed lady’ and the ‘best hat’.  The judges mingle with the crowds, so everyone is in with a chance of winning.

The judges are: BBC Radio Tees presenter Lisa McCormick; the Evening Gazette’s family life editor Maria Turbill; Fashionpeople fashion consultant Gail Little; and a representative from the online racing magazine Eclipse (whoohoo that’s us!!).

Redcar Racecourse’s general manager Amy Fair ethused: “Flowers, bubbly and fancy hats . . . what more could a girl want?  There’s certainly no need for Royal Ascot when there is Ladies’ Day at Redcar Races!  Every lady should dress to impress because they’ll be in with the chance of some great prizes.”

The fabulous local designers Kate Fearnley and Chic Hats will be showcasing a ‘What To Wear At The Races’ fashion show at 1pm.

The lady judged to be the ‘best dressed’ will be invited to go on to the Yorkshire Racecourses Grand Final on Ladies’ Day during the St Leger meeting at Doncaster Racecourse in September, the winner of which receives a luxury prize of a pampering pyjama party at the Best Western Mount Pleasant Hotel in Doncaster.

Back at Redcar Races on Saturday 18 June, the judging will be in the Winners’ Enclosure after the third and fourth races, with prizes from Kate Fearnley, Chic Hats, Market Cross Jewellers, Capture Le Coeur and Totepool.

The prizes for the ‘best dressed’ ladies are: (1st) 18 carat yellow gold 0.5ct sapphire and diamond cluster ring, similar to the Duchess of Cambridge’s engagement ring, from Market Cross Jewellers, a Kate Fearnley dress, Capture Le Coeur photography makeover, photoshoot and canvas or framed print and £100 in bets from the Tote; (2nd) Stainless teel DKNY watch; (3rd) Stainless steel fossil necklace.

The prizes for the ladies with the ‘best hat’ are: (1st) A bespoke handmade hat by Chic Hats, a Links of London silver and white friendship bracelet, and £100 in bets from the Tote; (2nd) A pair of glittering Swarovski earrings; (3rd) Stainless steel Guess necklace.

After Ladies’ Day, the highlights for the rest of the year at Redcar Racecourse include:

* Sunday 17 July – Helps For Heroes Family Fun Day;
* Saturday 6 August – Caribbean Carnival day;
* Saturday 27 August – Ladies’ and Gents’ Evening;
* Saturday 1 October – Seasonal climax with the £150,000 Tote Two Year Old Trophy, the Listed Guisborough Stakes and the final of the John Smith’s Straight Mile Championship Series.

Ladies’ Day is the second of a two-day meeting at Redcar Races which starts on Friday 17 June.

The first race on Friday is scheduled for 2.10pm, with admission gates open just after midday.  The finale is at 5.45pm.  On Saturday – Ladies’ Day – the first race of seven is at 2.15pm, with the last at 5.40pm.
