The Tote Placepot is by far one of the most popular Tote bets to play. Whether you are a die-hard horseracing fan, or a complete novice only heading for a day at the races, the Placepot will keep you entertained all day and might even land you a big win!
So how do you play it? You are aiming to pick horses to be placed in the first six races at a meeting, so this means you don’t have to get a single winner all day to win the bet. A placed horse is one that finishes 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th (depending on the number of horses in each race and the type of race they are running in).
To place the bet, pick up a Placepot slip from any Tote counter and mark the numbers of the horses you think will place in each race. Then select the stake of your bet.
Here is an example:
If you select two horses in all six races that you think are likely to place, you will have 64 potential winning combinations as it is worked out like this
2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 64 units
At this point you can decide what stake you want to bet. This can be as little as 10 cents and to work out the total cost of the bet you multiply the stake by the total number of units you have so…
64 units x 10 cent stake = €6.40 in total
When you have filled in the Placepot slip, hand it back to a Tote teller and you will get your official bet slip. Keep it safe as this is how you will claim your winnings!
Remember you can select as little as one horse in each race, or as many as you like! The more you pick the more it will cost, but obviously the greater your chances of winning a load of money. This might be handy if you have enjoyed your day at the races and want to go again!
So when you arrive at the track, make playing your Placepot priority number one, then you can go relax for the day and cheer your horses home in all six races. If you win, simply take your betting slip up to the Tote counters after the 6th race to cash in your winnings. And don’t forget, if you win big, the drinks are on you!
