Leading young jockey Harry Bentley is Goodwood Racecourse’s Ambassador for the 2014 season.

The 22-year-old grew up nearby in the village of Sullington on the South Downs and was appointed second jockey to the powerful Qatar Racing and Pearl Bloodstock operations at the start of last year.

Bentley, who had his first winner just over four years ago in January, 2010, has enjoyed a phenomenal rise through the weighing room ranks.

He was crowned champion jockey in Qatar for 2013/14 following a superb season in the country which included six winners in a single day at Doha and victory in the Qatar Derby.

Bentley enjoyed a dream first ride in a British Classic on 4 May as Lightning Thunder came home second in the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket and he also partnered the Olly Stevens-trained filly to finish runner-up in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Replaced by another jockey at Royal Ascot, Bentley has been promised the ride again in the future by Stevens who has the rider as his stable jockey.

He has enjoyed three wins at Goodwood so far, one this year and the others coming in 2012 and 2011. The jockey is waiting on his first Glorious Goodwood success.

“With Goodwood being one of my local tracks, it is a real honour to be the ambassador for the 2014 season,” said Bentley.

“Glorious Goodwood in particular is one of my favourite racing festivals during the Flat season in the UK and I am really looking forward to working with and representing the racecourse.”
