Held from 13th to 16th September, Doncaster’s St Leger Festival 2017  is the Flat season’s final Classic and the dress code for men is the classic shirt and tie with blazer, smart shoes and trousers.

You may be tempted to don your tweed jacket, but the ladies are not ready to swap their summer clothing for autumn wear and the men shouldn’t be either.

As a lightweight alternative to true tweed, New & Lingwood ‘Starling’ single-breasted puppy tooth jacket is ideal. Tailored from fine tropical merino wool cloth from one of Yorkshire’s mills. The buttons are black gloss horn with working cuffs. Price was £595, now on sale at £350.

If the sun does shine, the jacket has a soft half lined construction which makes is suitable for the warmer days. But if it is cold, then any jacket will provide warmth especially when teamed with a matching waistcoat. Price was £275 now £195.

Sartorial note: always keep the bottom button of the waistcoat undone.

Add a dapper style with a pocket watch chain and fob. The waistcoat has a vertical buttonhole just to hold the T-bar in place. Etsy has some gorgeous antique pieces such as this 1920s silver English hallmarked Albert pocket watch chain with a silver and gold fob. Price £160 from Sally Sales (Etsy).

And if you need the pocket watch, SallySales via Etsy has a selection such as this antique solid silver key wind pocket watch from the 1910s. Price £132.

The jacket does have matching trousers, but for a lighter summery look team with a pair of smart chinos. Model wears stretch cotton chinos in slate blue with 2% Lycra. Also available in other colours. Price was £155 now £95 from New & Lingwood.

Matching trousers (‘Starling’). Price was £275 now £195.

Here teamed with the ‘Cassian’ classic fit shirt in green/sky blue check with button down collar. Made from100% cotton. Price £125.

Taking the blue from the shirt, here the model wears the Skull & Crossbones silk tie in sky blue with white skulls. The tie is made using slip stitch construction with hand sewn bar tacks and feature self-loop keeper which ensures that the tie adjusts to each wearer’s neck. Price £95.

Remember the sartorial rule and do not match the pocket square pattern with the tie’s pattern. Introduce another colour into the mix as this tiny piece of silk fabric can be as flamboyant as it wants. Here we’ve introduced a lilac shade with Paul Costelloe’s Montagu silk pocket square in the traditional paisley print. Price was £29 now £20 from House of Fraser.

If the sun is shining don a pair of olive Oakley sunglasses. Price £120 from House of Fraser.

Complete the outfit with a pair of smart brogues. As this is a more tonal look, choose a tan or light brown. The Buddy brogues in light tan sport a bright blue colour pop sole which gives a more youthful feel and also complements the rest of the outfit. Price £100 from Dune London.
