The following trainers have high strike rates with favourites in the following races at Southwell today:

1:45– Verrazona – No 2 – Drawn 3 – Kevin Ryan

Kevin Ryan has a 55.6% winning strike rate in 3yo Handicaps at Southwell since 2006 with 5 winners from 9 runners on the all-weather surface when his horses go off as favourite.

Verrazona only had three runs as a 2yo. Her final start saw her win over course and distance in a Maiden race.  She led 4 furlongs our and then showed a battling quality to get back up to win by 1 ¼ lengths. Not many horses who contested the race have run again, but Granny Anne won next time out and won again last Friday.

She is unexposed for her handicap debut and there could well be more improvement in her. Phillip Makin who has ridden her on all three starts to date, takes the ride again today.

DID YOU KNOW? In January 2011 Tony Ward put up 35 selections for Eclipse readers, of which 15 won (42.85% winning strike rate). A £10 level stake investment on each selection produced a profit of £117.78 to industry starting prices.

TONY WARD

“I live in the North of Cumbria near the Solway Coast. My wife and I own a smallholding where we keep our horses. I have been involved in racing for over 20 years – the highlight being when a 2yo I owned won first time out at Hamilton Park. I work full-time in the racing game spending my time writing, researching and on course as a paddock judge – you can learn more about a horse’s chances watching them in the pre-parade and parade rings than you might imagine.”
