SECOND 2:35 – Lingfield – CORAL APP DOWNLOAD FROM THE APP STORE QUEBEC STAKES (Listed Race) (CLASS 1) (3yo+) 1m 2f Standard
A fascinating renewal of the Listed Quebec Stakes sees the winners from the last two years and a Group 1 winner from Brazil making his UK debut in the line-up.
However, Gatewood from the massively in-form stable of John Gosden looks to have plenty going for him on what is only his second run on the all-weather.
Gatewood made his debut on the all-weather at Kempton at the beginning of November in a Listed race over 1 mile 4 furlongs. He took to the surface well and was possibly unlucky to bump into the improving Pether’s Moon who beat Gatewood into second place by 3¾ lengths. However, he was 3¼ lengths clear of the third-placed horse and can go one better today.
Gatewood has run 18 times in his career to date. He has won five times and been placed on six other occasions. He has run at Listed and Group level nine times winning a Group 3 handicap in Australia and Listed Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot last year.
He drops back down in distance running over 1 mile 2 furlongs this afternoon, which is definitely his best trip. In seven runs over the distance he has won four times and been placed on two other occasions. He took to the polytrack surface at Kempton well enough, so underfoot conditions should be fine today.
The form of his yard coming into the race could hardly be better. John Gosden has sent out five winners from just eight runners in the last 14 days for an incredible strike rate of 63%. Two of his other three runners finished placed including The Fugue who finished second in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase.
Stable jockey William Buick rides today in what is his first ride in the UK for over two weeks. He has just two rides on the card at Lingfield, both for John Gosden and enjoys as 21% winning strike rate on the all-weather track at Lingfield.
On the back of his run at Kempton last month Gatewood looks a worthy favourite today. The five-year-old bay horse will not have things all his own way however with a number of all-weather specialists and a dangerous runner for the very much in-form Mark Johnston yard.
Gatewood does go well over this trip though and he advertised his wellbeing at Kempton last month and looks a decent bet at odds of 5/2.
Yesterday’s tip was unplaced.
“”I live on the Cumbrian/Northumberland border. I have been involved in racing for over 20 years – the highlight being when a two-year-old I owned won first time out at Hamilton Park. I work in the racing game spending my time writing, researching and on course as a paddock judge – you can learn more about a horse’s chances watching them in the pre-parade and parade rings than you might imagine.”
