Style for British Champions Day: Although British Champions Day is not the final day of the Flat racing season, it is the culmination of the British Champions Series and a popular end-of-season highlight.

It is a safe bet to say the British October weather will not be warm enough to go without a coat or jacket, so ensure yours makes a statement. However don’t opt for a heavy winter fabric yet, go transitional. Shibumi Style’s Cashmere Grace Coat is an ideal transitional coat due to the cashmere fabric, helping to keep you cool if the weather is mild, and warm as the weather starts to becomes colder. Price £325 from Shibumi Style on Etsy.

This coat does take centre stage with its bold colour and strong pattern so if you are not planning on attending any après racing parties a simple chic dress or trousers in a neutral shade will set the coat off nicely.

Just in case those invites do arrive, Biba’s rich velvet embroidered beaded dress is ready to swing into party action with its kick-flared hem.

The dress also allows for layering with a thin polo neck underneath if the weather does turns colder. Price £119 from House of Fraser.

The sock boot is the must have item this season. For the true fashionistas, pair this ankle-hugging boot with more voluminous tops and dresses such as the Biba dress. Keep the coat open so the Biba dress can billow underneath. Sockboots come in a variety of stretch fabrics and styles to suit all occasions – wool, leather, neoprene to velvet and satin; chunky heels, kitten heels to stilettos and from rounded to sharp pointed toes.

We have chosen the glossy satin Aphrodite sock boots from Office. Available in bright blue, black or metallic grey. Price £82.

The satin is soft enough to pin on a brooch so get creative and customise those sock boots with jewellery. We are loving this vintage Yves Saint Laurent bow pin brooch from The Hirst Collection on the Etsy website. Price £110.

Medium to large handbags are better for carrying a scarf, umbrella, gloves and sunglasses so you are prepared for the unpredictable weather.

Woodwards’ Leather cross body bag is available in a variety of pop colours to brighten your day. Here shown in lime. Price £130 from Etsy.

Ostentatious hats and headpieces tend not to be worn at this meeting. If you are a hat lover then choose something neat such as a pill box, cloche or beret in felt, wool, or tightly woven straw but it’s too early for fur and opt for muted colours.

The Oriole structured felt beret by Maggie Mowbray has a lovely tapered shape and is finished with two beaded drops in black, silver and white. It is made to order and many other colours are available, colour shown is ‘Spruce’. Price £285 on Etsy.
