USA: Jockey Javier Castellano finished the year as the leading rider by earnings for the fourth consecutive year while Ken and Sarah Ramsey were the top earners for owners for the third time in four years and Chad Brown for the first time was the top earner for trainers, according to final statistics released by Equibase Company LLC, the Thoroughbred industry’s official database for racing information. The 2016 British Flat Trainers Championship concluded on 31st December with Aidan O’Brien confirmed the runaway winner with £8,130,756 in accumulated win and place prize money. O’Brien ended the year with a record prize money haul that was more than double the tally of his closest pursuers. His tally means the record has been broken for the third year running, following John Gosden’s 2014/15 total which surpassed £5 million for the first time and which in turn eclipsed Richard Hannon’s record set the previous Championship season. Cheltenham Festival Prize Money: The Cheltenham Festival in March has received a significant prize money boost, leading to a new record total of £4,305,000 over the four days of the best of Jump racing. The £190,000 input to prize money benefits 23 of the 28 races at The Festival, with the biggest increases going to the four novice chases. The G1 Racing Post Arkle Novices’ Chase and the G1 RSA Novices’ Chase both are boosted by £25,000, with the total prize money of each rising to £175,000. Following this year’s record nominations, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has announced the finalists for the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards 2017. The panel of 12 judges have overseen 301 applications and taken on the task of narrowing them down to just three finalists in each of the six categories. South west-based jockey Harry Cobden has surged to the head of the Stobart Conditional Championship table with 38 winners, 12 clear of his nearest pursuer David Noonan in second, with Jamie Bargary in the third on 25.
