The final British Classic of the 2012 season – the Ladbrokes St Leger – took place on 15th September at Doncaster Racecourse.
On a glorious, sunny day a lively crowd enjoyed an eventful afternoon’s racing.
Quick Wit was too sharp for his rivals in the first, Viking Storm plundered the last and Doc Hay stole the big sprint in the final stride. Meanwhile, the Hannons bagged a treble – Toronado bubbling with class in the Champagne Stakes, Libranno in the Park Stakes and a battling victory by Rising Legend in the Nursery.
Sadly that was the only Legend to emerge as Camelot, trying to emulate Nijinsky 42 year earlier, disappointingly failed to land the Triple Crown in the St Leger. Victory going to 25/1 shot Encke ridden my Mikhail Barzalona in the famous Godolphin colours, proving that old adage: “That’s racing!”.
