Horseracing is the second most watched sport in the country, behind football. This year’s Grand National was watched by almost 11 million people on the BBC and many millions more worldwide. And yet there are many people who have never stepped foot on a racecourse, thinking that it’s solely the stomping ground of ageing men in tweed jackets.
To mark this year’s important summer of sport, Fontwell Racecourse is taking part in a new campaign to Get Britain Racing. The campaign will run across 17 racecourses throughout England and Wales and invites people to come racing for just £10 between June and August.
With more than 100,000 tickets available and an exciting summer of racing ahead, Let’s Get Britain Racing is designed to encourage people who have never been racing to try it for the first time, as well as offering great value for money to existing racing fans.
Phil Bell, Executive Director at Fontwell & Brighton Racecourses said: "With horseracing being one of the Queen’s favourite pastimes, her Diamond Jubilee year is the perfect time to launch this campaign to Get Britain Racing.
“Research suggests that the majority of people who visit racecourses are avid racing fans, with few being casual leisure visitors. We want to change that and encourage more people to come and experience a day at the races, which is about so much more than just watching the sport.
“You can see the beautiful horses up close in the parade ring, spot top jockeys walking amongst the crowd in their brightly coloured silks, enjoy being outdoors with beautiful views, experience the additional activities that we provide from children’s entertainment to Ladies Day, live music concerts and real ale festivals, and get swept up in the excitement of having a flutter, all while spending quality time with friends, family or colleagues. And now you can try it for just £10.”
Highlights of the summer racing calendar at Fontwell include:
- Thursday 21st June – Evening racing with Irish folk band, The Flash Company.
- Thursday 16th August – Ladies' Evening with the Magic of Take That & a £2000 cash prize for the Best Dressed Lady.
- Thursday 30th August – Summer evening racing.
